How to Upcycle Your Own Halloween Jack-o’-Lantern

Halloween is just right around the corner. As the nights draw in, it’s the perfect time to get your arts and craft on. If you don’t want the mess of carving a pumpkin, we’ve had an idea for a handy alternative. We want you to turn one of our tubes into a Jack-o’-Lantern! It’s easy, doesn’t make a mess, and you can re-use it again next year, unlike a pumpkin, which will inevitably rot.

If you don’t have one of our tubes, don’t worry, you can use any other tube or round object. This guide works for loads of different objects, so get creative. If you don’t have one of our tubes, don’t worry, you can use any other tube or round object. Toilet rolls or pringle tubes work great!

There are two ways we can make the Jack-o’-Lantern. One is to brush your tube and pumpkin features on with paint OR use paper to cover the tube. This option is great for kids because safety is key here. It may be Halloween but we don’t want any accidents. If you are feeling brave you can paint it orange and use a scalpel to cut out the features (make sure a responsible adult does this with a child!)

So what are you going to need?

  • Orange paint or card
  • Brown tape or glue
  • Black paint or black card
  • Scissors
  • Thick and thin paint brushes
  • Orange paint (acrylic works great)
  • Scalpel
  • LED tea light
  • Thick paint brush or sponge

Paint Option:

Step One:

Set out your workspace and cover anything you don’t want to be splashed with paint. Mix your orange paint and paint your tube. This may take a few coats. We added three coats to be exact! After a coat, allow the paint to dry then reapply until you can no longer see any of the original tubes.

Step Two:

Use a thin brush to paint on the pumpkin features with black paint. You can do wild here paint whatever you fancy on your lantern.

Paper/card Option

Step One:

Using scissors cut to size your orange paper or card to cover your tube. Secure to your tube using tape or glue.

Step Two:

Cut out the features for the Jack-o’-Lantern. You can use a number of different styles, so get creative and cut out the scariest eyes and mouth you can think of!

Scalpel Cutout Option

Step One:

Paint your vegums tube orange. We recommend painting first then you cut out your features but vice versa works great too.

Step Two:

Use a sharp scalpel to carefully cut out the features of your Jack-o’-Lantern, draw the shapes you’d like to cut out, then proceed to cut. Ensure there is always a responsible adult to supervise if a child is doing this.

Step Three:

Add in your LED tea light to your Jack-o’-Lantern, dim the lights, and let your scary lantern get in the Halloween spirit!
